Stock and 165hp fast. Not bad.

They came with gold wheels stock in 98, but those aren’t the stock wheels. I had a 2000 2.5 RS. It was extremely slow, but at least it was also a total piece of junk too.

No fender rust... clearly not from the northeast...
Cool, cheap (because they don’t have a “WRX” badge) cars but I’m not sure I’ve ever seen one Impreza of that generation without clear body rust.

(looking at them again, it looks like an NC plate)

Years ago a couple of friends and I went to test drive one of these. There were no automatics on the lot, so we had to test drive one with a manual. Brian, the one looking for a new car, couldn’t drive it because of a knee injury so I was chosen as the driver. The four of us piled in (me, two friends, salesman) and went for our drive. The salesman insisted that we get on the freeway via a cloverleaf on-ramp, to test out the grip. I hadn’t experienced anything like it - it was tenacious and pulled an amazing amount of g’s. The salesman told me to push it harder, and I did, because it was so amazing in this realm, and it never seemed to run out of grip - stunning.

Brian and I were buckled in up front, but the salesman and Wiley, in the back seat, were not. I looked into the mirror towards the back seat and saw the rather overweight salesman slid over towards the center of the car, perhaps even further. He was brutally crushing poor Wiley against the side of the car, leaving Wiley seemingly unable to breathe. Be careful what you ask for...

Love these. I just wish they would have made a wagon version. Sadly, all of the first gen Impreza wagons only got the 1.8L or 2.2L.

I didnt realize they were so rare. According to tavarisch only 14000 were made: http://thegarage.jalopnik.com/five-reasons-you-need-to-buy-a-subaru-impreza-2-5-rs-ri-1601310699

Those aren’t stock wheels. The 2.5RS came with gold 5-spoke wheels in 1998, silver 5-spoke wheels in 1999, and silver 6-spoke wheels in 2000 and 2001.

Those BBS wheels appear to be off of a first generation Forester STi (SF5, not sold in the US)

I wouldn’t call them slow, but they definitely aren’t fast. Weighing in at around 2800 pounds, the 165 hp and torque they came with was just enough to have fun with. Ask me how I know.

Kinja'd!!!

They grip for days with a decent suspension set up. When I tracked it this past season I could keep up with WRX’s and other more powerful cars through the corners. Those BBS are off of an early forester STI I believe.

I desperately wanted that exact car in high school. And I almost bought a later one after college.

When I think of Subaru in my mind, this is what I see.
